[xɛjl], Pieter Catharinus Arie, niederländischer Historiker, * Dordrecht 15. 12. 1887, ✝ Utrecht 31. 12. 1966; ursprünglich Journalist; 1919-36 Professor für niederländische Geschichte in London, 1936-58 für Neuere Geschichte in Utrecht; während des Zweiten Weltkriegs 1940-44 von der deutschen Besatzungsmacht interniert (zeitweilig im KZ Buchenwald).
 
Geyl betonte in seinen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten die Stammverwandtschaft von Flamen und Niederländern und vertrat den großniederländischen Gedanken. Später wandte er sich gegen A. J. Toynbees Geschichtsauffassung.
 
Werk: Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse stam, 4 Bände (1930-59, inhaltlich bis 1798 reichend).
